Hi, my name is Chris Dowd.
I took photography as a hobby and now it has become my passion. I specialise in dance and fitness photography, personal projects and collaborations.
I grew up in a housing commission home in Balwyn with my two brothers and two sisters, and had a wonderful childhood. As a teenager we followed Dad’s work as a builder to Queensland for three years but settled back to Melbourne, my favourite city!
After studying Chemistry, I worked at Materials Research Laboratories for 2 years then taught Maths, Science and Outdoor Education before returning to chemistry at GlaxoSmithKline.
I found my creative outlet as a photographer and completed my Diploma of Photography at NMIT (Melbourne Polytechnic) and became an accredited member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (aipp) where I received a number of Silver awards in competitions.
I’ve photographed most genres from sports, events, corporate headshots, editorials for land estates, models, portraits and fine art nudes but my current passion is shooting dancers and fitness.
Like photography, dance is about storytelling and where their movement that sculpts out a three dimensional space intersects with time, I try to capture moments that reflect their story.
Whilst my personal work is shooting dancers on location, I have also shot dance schools and concerts and I love to collaborate with other artists on concepts and projects; most recently I’m loving shooting fitness models.

Whilst I took up photography as a hobby for my retirement, I always endeavour to shoot at a professional standard.
I love what I do and believe in bringing out the very best in my subjects, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing people and artists.
I’m available for dance and fitness shoots as well as personal projects and collaborations.
I believe in face-to-face meetings, so why don’t we grab a coffee and have a chat. Let’s create something incredible.
